Pemigewasset Choral Society

50th Anniversary Concert – “Sweet Rivers”

Audience members should expect to experience a full range of emotions at this concert from the lyrical beauty of Schubert’s “Mass in G,” the tender poignancy of “I Soared Without Regret,” to the energetic spirit of “The Awakening” and “Lead with Love.”

The 100-voice Pemigewasset Choral Society, under the direction of William Gunn, will premiere a commissioned work by internationally recognized composer Moira Smiley. Her composition, “I Soared Without Regret,” is a musical setting of the powerful poem, “Flying,” by former Plymouth State University professor Jane Babin, who died from ALS in 2015.

The chorus will be accompanied by a chamber orchestra for several pieces including the beautiful “Mass in G” by Franz Schubert, “Sweet Rivers” by Shawn Kirchner, and a collection of other dynamic choral works that celebrate the positive impact of music in our lives.

As is the chorus’ custom, admission is by donation.

This concert is proudly presented by The Laconia Putnam Fund.

An Evening with Gaelic Storm

An Evening with Gaelic Storm

It’s hard to imagine a band just coming into their own after 20 years of success, but that’s exactly what makes a true anomaly. This multi-national, Celtic juggernaut grows stronger with each live performance, and as you can imagine, after two decades and over 2000 shows, it is a true force to be reckoned with. With their latest release, Go Climb a Tree, their music has never sounded more representative of themselves as musicians and as live performers.

The band attributes their continued success to their fanatic audience, and it’s a well-diversified crowd for sure. The country-music folks adore the storytelling, the bluegrass-heads love the instrumentals, Celtic fans love their devotion to tradition, and the rockers simply relish the passion they play their instruments with. Each band member, in their own way, expresses a deep gratitude for their fans, but it’s best summed up in the words of Patrick Murphy: “The fans are the ones that have given us this life. We’re here for them.”

On Go Climb a Tree, co-founders of Gaelic Storm, Steve Twigger and Patrick Murphy, along with longtime friend and co-writer Steve Wehmever, are again at the helm of song-writing duties. The album has everything—party drinking songs  (“The Beer Song”), patriotic anthems (“Green, White and Orange”), beautiful folk songs (“Monday Morning Girl”), spritely instrumentals “”The Night of Tomfoolery”), perfectly poppy songs (“Shine On”), and even a raucous pirate song (“Shanghai Kelly”). When speaking of the overall concept of the album, Patrick Murphy gives some insight: “With all the craziness and division in the world, we wanted to make an album about ‘contemplative escapism.’ Go Climb a Tree certainly isn’t about dropping out of the conversation, it’s just about taking a short hiatus to recharge the batteries before you take on the world again.”

Gaelic Storm takes a true blue-collar, hard-nose approach to touring, consistently traveling the US and internationally over 200 days a year, forging a unique path in the Celtic music world. “You have to see us live. We are the true working-mans’ band,” says Ryan Lacey, who joined the lineup in 2003. “We still, and most likely always will, tour most of the year, and that’s how we constantly hone our craft.”

The dedication to live shows date all the way back to the mid-1990s, when Gaelic Storm kicked off its career as a pub band in Santa Monica, California. Due to their discovery at the pub, by the end of the decade, the musicians had appeared in the blockbuster film Titanic (where they performed “Irish Party in Third Class”). This laid the groundwork for a career that would eventually find them topping the Billboard World Chart six times, making appearances at mainstream music festivals, and regularly headlining the largest Irish Festivals across the country, all the while gaining a reputation as a genre-bending Irish rock band, whose songs mix Celtic traditions with something uniquely creative.

Looking to the future, Gaelic Storm is excited about what lies ahead. In 2022, they were excited to welcome Natalya Kay, an incredible fiddler hailing from Western Massachusetts, but living now in Music City, Nashville, TN. Natalya's energy and presence on stage has been a force to be reckoned with.

Live From Laurel Canyon - Songs & Stories of American Folk Rock

Live From Laurel Canyon
THE STORY | The Birth of a Rock & Roll Neighborhood

"Live from Laurel Canyon - Songs and Stories of American Folk Rock" is an evening of live music and narrated stories of some of the most influential songwriters who lived in Laurel Canyon in the mid 1960's and 70's.   Similar to other legendary rock and roll neighborhoods of the same era like Haight Ashbury in San Francisco or Greenwich Village in NYC, Laurel Canyon was a community of artists who would forge a new genre of music (Folk Rock) and forever change the look, sound and attitude of American pop music.   Live from Laurel Canyon celebrates The Mamas and The Papas, the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Doors, Crosby, Stills, Nash, Neil Young, James Taylor, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, America, and the Eagles with their own unique interpretations of some of the most iconic songs of the era.

Much more than a 'tribute' act, Live from Laurel Canyon not only performs the music you love in a new and unique way but shares with you the stories that inspired them.  Live from Laurel Canyon is a journey through a special time in American pop music... won't you join us?

AN EVENING WITH COWBOY JUNKIES

AN EVENING WITH COWBOY JUNKIES

Sometimes revolutions begin quietly.

In 1988, Cowboy Junkies proved that there was an audience waiting for something quiet, beautiful and reflective. The Trinity Session was like a whisper that cut through the noise -- and it was compelling. It stood out in the midst of the flash and bombast that came to define the late 80's. The now classic recording combined folk, blues and rock in a way that had never been heard before and went on to sell more than a million copies.

Formed in Toronto in 1985 with siblings Michael Timmins on guitar, Margo Timmins on vocals, Peter Timmins on drums, and Michael’s lifelong friend Alan Anton on bass, the band has sparkled over the course of 26 albums. “I’ve known Alan longer than I’ve known Pete,” says Michael. “We were friends before Pete was born.”

Unlike most long-lasting groups, Cowboy Junkies have never had a break up or taken a sanity-saving hiatus. There’s an appreciation of each other that keeps them constantly working. “It’s that intimacy and understanding of what each one of us brings to the table,” says Michael. Cowboy Junkies’ will be performing a career-spanning show, including their new album, ‘Such Ferocious Beauty’, which was released worldwide on June 2, 2023 to universal critical acclaim.

WARREN MILLERS "ALL TIME"

Warren Miller’s ALL TIME is bringing 74 years of filmmaking reimagined to a theater near you this fall. And this season, it's all about good turns and good snow on good hills with good people.  Narrated by Jonny Moseley, ALL TIME dives deep into elements that Warren himself first identified as the stuff of which snowy dreams are made. From the birth of ski towns like Sun Valley and Aspen to icons and innovators like the original hotdoggers, the film brings the best of seven decades along with humor and inspiration from today—featuring Maine’s finest athlete, Donny Pelletier, and the next generation of skiers and riders at Woodward Park City.

Less a documentary than a love letter, ALL TIME is a way to honor how, where, and with whom we’ve made ski and snowboard movies since Warren first picked up a camera in 1949.

Join us as we celebrate how snow sports have burrowed into our collective consciousness as an obsession and a way of life. The two-year party for 75 seasons on snow starts October 2023. Visit warrenmiller.com to find a show near you.

JIMMY DUNN’S COMEDY ALL-STARS
Nov

JIMMY DUNN’S COMEDY ALL-STARS

Featuring:

Jimmy Dunn
Tony V
Mitch Stinson
Paul Nardizzi

Jimmy Dunn is an actor and comedian who is most recognized from the CBS sitcom The McCarthys, where he co-starred as Sean McCarthy.

He got his start in the comedy world performing stand-up at a bar in Gloucester, Massachusetts, where he was paid in beer and fried clams.
Since then, Jimmy has gone on to perform on some of the comedy world's biggest stages, including Montreal’s Just For Laughs Comedy Festival,
The Late Show with David Letterman, CONAN, and Comics Come Home with Denis Leary.

Boston Sports fans know Jimmy from his many appearances on NESN (The New England Sports Network). He was the co-host of Fan Attic, a classic sports highlight show for the Bruins and Red Sox, and wrote and hosted "The Traveling Fan" segments on the Red Sox Pre-Game Show. He was also the wise-cracking voice of Sox Appeal, the Emmy award-winning dating show that took place inside Boston’s Fenway Park.

Tony V just opened for Bill Burr in front of 37,000 people at Fenway Park. He started his stand-up comedy career in 1982 after attending several shows at Boston’s prestigious Comedy Connection. He wandered in one night, quite by accident, looking for a little stress relief from a high pressure job as a case worker at the Somerville Mental Health Center. Tony was working his way toward a Masters degree in social work having graduated from the University of Massachusetts with a B. S. in Psychology. It was not long after that he took to the stage himself. Tony’s street wise humor tempered with a genuine feel for the human condition quickly propelled him to headliner status on the national comedy club circuit.

In 1986 Tony V was named “Funniest Person in Massachusetts” by Showtime television. He followed this achievement with several performances on HBO, the Arts and Entertainment Network, Comedy Central and MTV. From 1987 through 1992 Tony V became the “spokesperson” for American Tourister Luggage. Remember the suit case smashing gorilla? It was Tony that gave the ape it’s distinct voice and temperament. Touring extensively in and out of his high tech forty-five thousand dollar yak hair gorilla suit, both Tony and his alter ego had many interesting adventures. If you get a chance ask Tony about a meeting between The Gorilla, Spuds MacKenzie and Ronald McDonald. You won’t believe your mind.

Mitch Stinson is a former aircraft-carrier aviator for the United States Navy who, as a pilot, made over 200 carrier landings during his 10 year military career. Mitch has recently risen through the comedy ranks in the Northeast US by virtue of his original material that offers unique insight into the transition from hot-shot Navy pilot to everyday civilian life… resonating with comedy crowds everywhere.

Paul Nardizzi is a Boston based comedian known for his rapid fire delivery and sarcasm.  Paul grew up just outside of Boston in Dedham Massachusetts.  He graduated from Bentley University before embarking on a career in stand up.  He made his first Tv appearance five years later.    He has been described as a cross between Dennis Miller and Steven Wright.   Paul is a fan of both, although he prefers George Carlin over all others.  The greatest compliment he ever got was from the father of a comedian he had just bested in a comedy competition.  The man told his son, while in earshot  of Paul, "He beat you because you say things funny, but he says funny things."
